Todd started StringWorks in 1997 while working at Butterfields/Bonhams as the Director of Fine Musical Instruments as well as performing as a cellist with Los Angeles Opera. Wanting to create a nationwide rental program, run by string teachers whose students did not have access to quality instruments, he became frustrated with the instruments available, at the prices needed for a successful program. Quality of wood, construction, and setup were all often neglected, and string players would find themselves frustrated attempting to learn on instruments that made playing even more difficult. From this frustration he launched his own company, StringWorks, designing his own instrument lines to fulfill all these requirements. The market responded in a far different manner than intended, however, and players began to purchase the two (at the time) StringWorks instrument lines - Crescendo and Artist - and demand rose quickly for additional, higher level instruments. At this time, the internet was in its infancy, with Amazon launching the first e-commerce site in 1996, thus, in 1997, Todd decided to try and launch a website for his new, family-run company, being the first to sell musical instruments of any kind on the web, and the rest is history. Todd retired from performing as a cellist with Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Master Chorale, and occasional performer with various Hollywood studios and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, focusing his energies more on his current, past, and future members of the StringWorks musical instrument family.
